Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, aka Medicare Part D, is not just for seniors.  Individuals with disabilities are eligible too.  It is important to know that everyone with Medicare is eligible for this coverage, regardless of income and resources, health status, or current prescription expenses.  Some individuals, based on income and resources, may be eligible for subsidies and financial support that will help reduce premium and prescription drug costs.  If you are receiving Medicare, it is important that you visit the Medicare Website now at http://www.medicare.gov/ to find out important information and how to enroll.  It is important to note that if you are covered by a third party insurance provider who will continue to provide equivalent coverage once the Medicare D program starts in January; you may not need to file for Part D benefits.  Contact your insurance carrier for specific information.

If you are not covered by another equivalent plan you need to file an application at your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office before December 31, 2005, if you want coverage to begin in January 2006.  You must file an application; it is not automatic and delaying could cost you money as monthly premium penalties apply.  You must file your application during the open enrollment period or you will have to wait until the next year.  Keep the following important dates in mind:

January 1, 2006:  Coverage begins for people who have joined by December 31, 2005
May 15, 2006:  Last day to join a plan offering coverage for 2006
November 15 - December 31, 2006:  Next opportunity to enroll
