Support Groups:

North and South Carolina

Hello, I am Paul Stewart, coordinator of the North Carolina Support Group.  I am hoping to develop a group that will encourage wide participation so that we are able to provide support to each other across both North and South Carolina.  We would also like to become a strong source of support to the work of The Transverse Myelitis Association.

I have been dealing with Transverse Myelitis for about 17 Years.  I have been in the North Carolina area for about ten years.  I am a volunteer with Make a Wish Foundation of Central and Western North Carolina.  I would like to use my experience to help our support group grow.  Please don’t hesitate to send ideas and suggestions to help with the development of our support group.  Once we have established a strong foundation, we will need your help and participation.  I will am looking forward to hearing from you!

Walgreen’s is building a distribution center in Anderson, South Carolina and hopes to employ about 800 people in 2006-2007; this includes about 300 people with disabilities.

Walgreen’s effort was motivated by one of their senior executives who has a child with a disability.  He wanted to make sure that opportunities would be there for his child and others with disabilities.  What Walgreen’s is doing has never been done before; they are history in the making.  They have restructured their operation lines so that items come to the person instead of the person bringing things to the line.  They have automated and simplified processes; Walgreen’s is ready-willing-and able to make reasonable accommodations.

Walgreen’s is committed to changing the corporate culture of their organization and the world.  They have invested time, energy and money to making this happen. The goal is to employ individuals with disabilities throughout the organization and to provide opportunities to those who have traditionally not had a chance.  If you have supervisory and/or distribution experience, send your resume to wheeldogs[AT SIGN]charter.net and Sandy will forward your information on to the appropriate officials.  Others who are interested can contact the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department in Anderson, SC at (864) 224-6391 (Voice/TTY) or anderson[AT SIGN]scvrd.state.sc.us.
