Reading for Rachel Cathy Dorocak
The Reading for Rachel Program for the year 2001 is well underway. We have every hope that this year will be a really successful year for the program given our broader geographic appeal, improved web site, logo etc. We have been promoting the program in the months of January and February and the children will be reading their books for Rachel in March. It is not too late to get involved. If you are interested in participating in the program, you can download all of the materials you will need at our beautifully designed web site: www.myelitis.org/readingforrachel You can also obtain the materials by contacting one of our regional coordinators: Richard J. Boyle Gayle Peltier If you are unable to participate this year, we would hope that you will consider getting involved next year. The Reading for Rachel Program Team spent most of the summer and fall preparing the materials, including our beautiful Reading for Rachel logo and bookmark. Now that this work is behind us, we plan on rolling out the program during the late summer months in coming years. Our plan is to approach schools either before the school year begins or shortly thereafter each year. We want to be certain that they consider the program before they have finalized their schedules/fundraisers for the school year. If you know teachers, principals, school administrators, PTA officers and members, librarians, or school board members, it is not too early to talk to them about the Reading for Rachel Program. Share with them your own experiences with TM, and help to educate them about the importance of finding a cure for this condition. Every single dollar earned from the Reading for Rachel Program will be used for TM research. The program is fun for children, and it creates a wonderful opportunity for children to be encouraged to read, and to spend time with their parents reading! Children can also learn some very important lessons about disabilities and helping others. The Reading for Rachel Program is very easy to implement and administer. It is also an opportunity for children to work on the Internet by navigating, downloading and printing documents. They will also be able to see a video of Rachel in a variety of therapy settings so they can see whom they are helping! We encourage everyone to watch the 7-minute video, which can be found on the main page of our web site. We are also hoping for worldwide involvement in the Reading for Rachel Program. We have learned very rapidly that TM knows no ethnic, racial or geopolitical boundaries. Since the very beginnings of The Transverse Myelitis Association, we have been making friends from every continent and country around the globe. It is our most fervent hope that treatment and cure research would benefit everyone who has TM, regardless of where they live. We encourage our members from everywhere in the world to get involved in Reading for Rachel. Richard, Gayle and my husband Dan and I would like to thank Matthew and Kevin for being such wonderful brothers to Rachel and for thinking of such a great way to celebrate Rachel's birthday each year. We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to promote the Reading for Rachel Program - every effort, both big and small is very appreciated. We would also like to thank Nic Niland for designing the wonderful logo and bookmark for the program. Finally, we would like to thank Jim Lubin for creating such a great web site for the Reading for Rachel Program. We have created a super Reading for Rachel Team, and we are hopeful for even bigger and better results in the future. Thank you all so much for your support! Cathy Dorocak |
